Traditional Chinese medicine
Acupuncture originated in China more than 3,000 years ago and is used to diagnose and treat illness, prevent disease and improve total well-being.
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is based on a concept of vital energy, or qi, that is believed to flow throughout the body. It is proposed to regulate a person's spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical balance. Among the components of TCM are acupuncture, herbal, nutritional therapy, restorative physical exercises, meditation, and remedial massage, Acupressure.
How Acupuncture Works
Modern scientific research has shown that acupuncture stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals (endorphins, the body’s natural pain killers) in the muscles, spinal cord and brain. These chemicals decrease inflammation and pain. It may also restore balance to the hormone system. Acupuncture blocks the transmission of pain signals to the brain and increases circulation in the problem area, thus promoting tissue regeneration.
The stimulation of well defined acupuncture points the energy pathways can be reconnected and balanced the body’s vitality. The energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture stimulates the body’s natural healing abilities and promotes physical and emotional well-being.
How Acupuncture Feels?
Most patients feel only minimal pain as the needles are inserted; some feel no pain at all. Once the needles are in place, there is no pain felt. After the insertion of the needles, patients can experience different energetic sensations such as warmth or pressure. Many patients describe the sensation as an unfamiliar but pleasant and relaxing feeling.
Safety
Out of many millions of treatments in the West in the past two decades, very few problems have been reported. Currently, state and federal agencies have established strict procedures for needle sterilization.
Acupuncture needles are very thin and solid and are made from stainless steel. The risk of bruising and skin irritation is less than when using a hollow needle.
Types of Treatment
Treatment with acupuncture needles is the most commonly used technique. However
acupuncturists may utilize other forms of treatment such as an energy lamp and a variety of acupressure and movement techniques. They may also recommend dietary modifications, herbal prescriptions and specific therapeutic exercises.
How Many Treatments Are Necessary?
The number of treatments needed differs from person to person. It is not uncommon for patients to experience significant effectiveness after one treatment. Ten treatments within a four to five week period is a normal course of treatment, and then the case is evaluated. For complex or long-standing conditions, one or two treatments a week for several months may be recommended. For acute problems, usually fewer visits are required. For health maintenance, six sessions a year may be all that is necessary.
About Chinese Medicine and Herbal Formula?
Chinese Medicine emphasizes a holistic approach that treats the whole person. Individual herbs are rarely prescribed alone in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The combination of herbs in a formula creates a new therapeutic agent that can treat much more effectively then a single herb. Chinese herbal medicine uses most of plant. For some people, the herb has minimal side effects. The most commonly reported adverse reaction is minor gastrointestinal upset.
